Subject: [Civic-Courage] Some personal thoughts prompted by working on the analysis
Send reply to: Civic-Courage@yahoogroups.com
Dear CCers,
It's been a bit tricky doing the analysis because I keep having thoughts about what I think the best way to go would be!! :) And yet I really wanted the first part of the exercise to explore options rather than espouse a particular approach. hopefully I've now done a least a passable job of identifiying options.
Having done a partial analysis, it might now be useful to give you a bit of a glimpse of my own thoughts that have emerged as I worked though everyone's material.
I lean towards the following views:
- that if someone has already got an award system going for civic courage that we shouldn't try to replicate it (unless we come up with a startlingly different and desirable model) If we think we can see ways to improve an existing award model then we should discuss this with the people doing the job now and see how open they are to further developments in their system.
- that awards (as such) are probably not the core of what we are on about - rather I think it is learning from past practice and thinking about how to create new modes of acting
- boosting the number of people exhibiting courage (and other desirable charactersitics) is the key issue and this is in some ways a culture building and capacity building exercise
- too much adulation of super-human heroes might actually be counterproductive because it could send a subliminal message to people that they cannnot in fact emulate what the heroes are doing - I suspect the best combination would be to see people who are pretty normal who are nevertheless doing really great things
- it will be really important to keep a close link between the critical issues and the development of personal attributes and skills - in fact the whole exercise should probably be driven by a deep appreciation of our needs - socially and environmentally
- we should focus on promoting/developing a suite of critically important behaviours and skills - with courage being a really important one - among many
- the reason to put people forward into the public lime-light is both to encourage desirable behaviour by affirming it and also to enable people to learn from case studies and examples
- we should have a combined service provision/R&D model so we can start with a useful idea of outreach to the community and then over time extend the services - based on a model of our purpose that is more wide-ranging than the initial action focus might suggest
- we should encourage and set up our service in a way that encourages very widespread interest and more importantly perhaps wide-spread engagement - eg. encourageing people to actively participate in seeking out examples of people acting is useful way and enouraging people to think about what is being exemplified and what is needed, etc.
- we should, at some stage in our project, provide support for people to sort through crucial issues so that the risk of getting out of touch with reality is reduced
What do you think we should do?
Cheers, Philip
