Title: "Redesigning commerce - for a sustainable future"
Part 1 - Vision

How far, how fast?
(the sustainability imperatives: ecological, social and economic)
(descriptive material)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

What do we mean by sustainability?
(a theoretical framework that covers the ecological, social and economic dimensions - in their own right and also in terms of how they support each other)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Images of a sustainable future - and pathways there
(pieces by futurists about what things might be like - to help make the whole thing feel more concrete - stress that the future is unknown but can be shaped)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Part 2 - Action

Redesigning the economy
(provides an introductory framework to integrate and contextualise the following four chapters)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Redesigning consumption
(case studies and theory on changes in the demand side of the market)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Redesigning the firm
(case studies and theory on the management of the firm)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Redesigning industry structures
(case studies and theory on industry policy)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Redesigning the playing field
(case studies and theory on macro policy eg. ecotaxation, legal frameworks, investment patterns, competition and collaboration strategies)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Redesigning local economies
(case studies and theory on sustainability-promoting local economic development strategies)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

The change process - making it happen
(case studies and theory on how to effectively move along the redesigning process)
(endpiece on the research & development agenda)

Action resources
(where to get materials and advice/assistance)

We need to call for papers, workshops etc. on these themes - especially looking at alternative need tomodels and regional differences across the world. We can put the multitude of contributions up on the web. Then we can get an author's group to write the book based on the contributed material - with one lead author per main topic (chapter).

For both the book and the conference we need material on:

Content:
- crucial common ground
- controversies
- gaps
- regional/cultural differences

Type of material:
- models
- issues
- examples

It might be good to produce a separately published paper series to stimulate debate on each chapter area - that way something tangible is happening before the book itself arrives in 2001.
